Alaska has more than 98 percent of the U.S. population of brown bears. Biologists estimate there are about 30,000 of these big bruins in Alaska. Bears are typically solitary creatures and usually avoid the company of other bears

Technically, brown and grizzly bears are classified as the same species. However, due to abundant food in Kodiak's rivers Kodiak's brown bears are well known for their bigger size as bears in the Interior that mostly feed on roots, berries and rodents.
