You and your guide will fly out from Homer and set up a base camp on the beach along the east coast of Katmai National Park. From your camp you hike around and explore the best wildlife viewing, scenery and photography opportunities in the area, returning to the base camp for our meals and for the evening. The majority of the tours will be in Hallo Bay or Swikshak Lagoon areas.
The food provided on these tours is nutritious, healthy high energy camping food (please don't except gourmet food) and the guide is responsible for all cooking and cleaning chores. We are happy to take any dietary need into consideration. Our camping gear is good quality mordern backcountry style tents and sleeping bags.
We practice strict leave no trace ethics on these tours in order to preserve the environment that we operate in, our camps are surrounded by electric fences to deter bears and we limit the types of food or other scented items such as perfumes or lotions. A complete list of items that you should bring or are not allowed to bring will be provided.
Included in the tour:
- transportation to and from the camping area with a volcano / glacier flightsee
- all camping gear (tents, electric fences, sleeping and cooking gear) required for the tour
- safety equipment (satellite phone, radios, first aid kits, emergency food etc)
- food for the entire tour
- minimum of 1 guide to every 4 clients
Departure times and tour duration:
The departure time is in the mid morning to early afternoon on the first day arriving at our camping area by mid day to early afternoon. This leaves lots of time to get camp set and tour around the area before the evening when the light is best for photography and bear activity increases.
On the last day we will depart the camping area around mid day after the best morning light and bear activity and arrive back in Homer in the early afternoon.

This is how a tour could look like:
Day 1
Arrival and set up camp. Take pictures of bears and landscape in the evening, hike for about 3 to 4 hours.
Day 2
Hike along the river towards the glacier as far as you like. The river goes along a mountain range before it opens up to a lake and the glacier.
Day 3
Spend the whole day with the bears in the grass and on the beach.
Day 4
Cath the morning light to take more pictures of the bears and watch them fishing. Then it is time to leave the camp and fly back to homer.
