Polar Bears in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Kaktovik on Barter Island

Polarbear viewing is possible early September till mid November. Best viewing is till mid October.
The bears can be seen on Barter Island and in the surrounding Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The village of Kaktovik lies on Barter Island in the Arctic Ocean. Of its 256 people, most are Inupiat Eskimo, the only indigenous people of this land, and to that end help define this place, along with the air, sea, mountains, tundra and wildlife.

As weather can be very foggy on Barter Island at that time of the year, you need to spend at least one night in Fairbanks before leaving. If due to fog/weather your flight cannot leave that day, you will need to spend an extra night in Kaktovik and may return to Fairbanks only the following afternoon. Please take this into consideration when booking your flight out of Fairbanks.
