Details:
Day 1: Arrival in Anchorage. Explore Anchorage at your leisure. Overnight.
Day 2: Drive via the Glenn and Parks Highways to Denali National Park. 231 Miles. The road is paved the whole way. It is a multi-lane highway at first, although it narrows to two lanes once you leave town. Overnight near the Denali National Park entrance.
Day 3: Denali National Park Wildlife Tour. 6-8 hour bus tour through Denali National Park. This is your best opportunity to see bears, wolves, moose, caribou, foxes and other wildlife up close. Overnight near the Denali National Park entrance. (same as Day 2)
Day 4: Drive on the Parks Highway to Fairbanks, 121 miles. The scenic drive allows you plenty of time to explore a little on foot, either in town or in the forest. Fairbanks is no pulsing metropolis, but it does offer some interesting diversions. Overnight in a lodge near Fairbanks.
Day 5: Continue on to Chena Hot Springs Road to Chena Hot Springs. Take advantage of a variety of activities at Chena Hot Springs, including hikes, hot spring baths, horseback riding, ATV rides, etc. Lots of wildlife viewing. Overnight at the same lodge outside of Fairbanks.
Day 6: Drive the Richardson Highway to Paxson. As you leave Fairbanks, you follow the Tanana and the Delta Rivers up into the Alaska Range mountains. Stop and watch the salmon spawn on the other side of the pass. Spectacular scenery. 172 miles. Overnight in Paxson.
Day 7: Drive southward to Chitina on the Richardson and Edgerton Highways. 140 Miles. Fly from Chitina to McCarthy. Stay overnight in the old gold-mining town of McCarthy, which has a current year-round population of 27.
Day 8: Spend the day on your own. Visit the copper-mining ghost town of Kennicott. Hike along the Root Glacier. Enjoy some of the best flightseeing in Alaska. Other various activities. Overnight in McCarthy.
Day 9: Return flight to Chitina. Drive from Chitina to Valdez 120 Miles. This is a spectacular drive through the Chugach Mountains. Drive up to the edge of the Worthington Glacier. Overnight in Valdez.
Day 10: Take the ferry through Prince William Sound from Valdez to Whittier, and continue southward on the Seward Highway to Seward. 98 Miles. The highway offers outstanding sightseeing opportunities, including spawning salmon, and a number of good hiking trails. Seward is a small fishing village with an excellent aquarium (Alaska SeaLife Center). Overnight in Seward
Day 11: Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise Tour. This 6-hour whale-watching/glacier cruise takes you to Holgate Glacier. Lunch is included. After your cruise, depart Seward for the 90-mile drive to Kenai. Overnight in Kenai
Day 12: Continue down the Sterling Highway to Homer. (83 miles) Homer is a fishing village, but it is also home to a veritable colony of artists and musicians who peddle their wares along the Homer spit. Overnight outside of Homer
Day 13: Homer. Free day in Homer. There are plenty of things to keep you occupied in Homer: Fishing charters, a visit to Halibut Cove, a stroll on the Spit. Stop by the Visitors Center for detailed information. Overnight outside of Homer.
Day 14: Return on the Sterling and Seward Highways to Anchorage. (233 Miles) Leave the rivers and lakes behind, and return to the big city. Overnight in Anchorage
Day 15: Return your rental vehicle and depart Anchorage.
