Katmai National Park and Preserve

Katmai National Monument was created in 1918 to preserve the famed Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a spectacular forty square mile, 100 to 700 foot deep ash flow deposited by Novarupta Volcano. A National Park & Preserve since 1980, today Katmai is still famous for volcanoes, but also for brown bears, pristine waterways with abundant fish, remote wilderness, and a rugged coastline.

Bear Watching at Brooks Camp

Who hasn’t seen the pictures? You know them. Grizzlies jockey for the best fishing spot among the cascades, reaching out to grab a meal as the salmon jump upstream through the waterfalls. These are scenes from Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, and a visit to Katmai is certain to be the highlight of your Alaska trip. If you want to see bears, this is the place. Fly from Anchorage to King Salmon, where you meet your air taxi to the Brooks Camp. There you have 1-3 days to do all the bear-viewing you want, right there around the camp. While you are there, explore the famed Valley of 10,000 Smokes, an enormous smoking basin left behind by the last eruption of the nearby volcano, Novarupta. The best time to travel to Katmai to see the world-famous bear activity is from July to the beginning of August, and then again in September. Any time of year is great to hike through the Valley of 10,000 Smokes or to enjoy the spectacular scenery of one of America's most remarkable national parks. Because of limited accommodations within the park and the popularity of this destination, the cabins and lodge are completely booked up months in advance.

Adventure Packages at Katmai Wilderness Lodge
Katmai Wilderness Lodge is the only private establishment on the coast of Katmai’s 3.6 million acre wilderness.  At Kukak Bay, with a backdrop of majestic mountains and awesome glaciers, Katmai Wilderness Lodge is amidst one of the most important archaeological sites in the North Pacific region.

On a daily basis we depart the lodge on our landing craft boats (vessels with a ramp bow specially designed to go aground and safely off load guest).  Here we'll access different beach fronts and join the bears on land.  Watch as they dig for clams, fish (depends on time frame of visit), eat grasses/berries or just plain relax.  Take in fox, eagles, beach comb for "hidden treasures" that the winter tides brought in.  We also use the boats to troll the many rookeries.  Observe seals sunning themselves upon the rocks, sea otters, birds/ducks of many varieites.  Puffins are a favorite.  Since the lodge is located on the coastline, guest can appreciate both land and marine wildlife.

Lodging consist of guest cabin rooms with private entrances and baths.  The main lodge host the dining area where our chef serves amazing cuisine, sitting room to share daily experiences with others, books, games, VCR to view video taken, multi level deck where one can relax after a day in the field and take in the wildlife and scenery from the lodge itself.  Lodge is powered by solar, wind and gas generator.  Above all, our highly professional and skilled lodge staff ensures everyone's visit is an enjoyable vacation.
