Detailed itinerary
This canoeing and hiking trip around Twin Lakes at Lake Clark National Park offers a view of Alaska from its best. From icy volcanic peaks to open treeless tundra, the remote and very little visited National Park in south west Alaska offers a variety of ecosystems and wildlife. From relaxing base camps we day hike, relax or fish for trout. We paddle the following 6 days towards the Chilikadrotna River and the outlet at the lower lake.

We will meet in Anchorage where we load our gear into a floatplane and fly across the Cook Inlet into the glaciated Chigmit Mountains, a part of the Aleutian Range. Our pilot drops us at the upper end of the Twin Lakes, where we set up our first camp. We prepare our canoes and fish for lake trout or just explore the area.

The next day we explore the Chigmit Mountains on a day hike (approx. 6 hours). Get ready for some untouched wilderness. We will get back to camp in the late afternoon.

The following day, we pack our tents and start canoeing the upper lake. On the way we visit the cabin of Dick Proenneke, the author of the best selling diary “One Man’s Wilderness”. He built this cabin in 1968 and lived here until a few years ago. We set up our camp near the stream that connects the upper and lower Lake. On the following day hike (approx. 6 hours) we try to reach the pass to the Kijik River Valley. Those who want can summit one of the surrounding peaks.

The next day we break camp and continue canoeing across the lower Twin Lake to a small sheltered bay. A hike up "Death Valley" on the following day brings us in a rock desert-like valley. We’ll escape it and climb up to the Green Mountains to get a wonderful view over the Twin Lakes and the mountains surrounding them.

We break camp the following day and canoe towards the outlet of the lower lake, the Chilikadrotna River. A short hike to small lakes around our camp will end the active part of our trip. The next day we get picked up by floatplane and we fly back to Anchorage.
